New Nerd Fitness Blog Post!

I'm a big Nerd Fitness fan, and with really good reason! NF was one of the sites that helped me kick-start my motivation in November of last year. I can honestly say that the Nerd Fitness philosophy and community helped me point my life on a better course!

Steve Kamb is the Nerd in Chief at Nerd Fitness, and his blog posts are pure gold! Here is this week's post, 10 Ways to Level Up Your Life in 5 Minutes or Less!

The Power of Investment Time

Ask yourself a simple question. This will only take a minute, but you have to answer it honestly.

What did you do today?

Go ahead, think about it for a minute before your answer. You got up, had some breakfast, probably went to work. You might have chatted with friends, checked out your favorite social media, grabbed some lunch, or maybe you skipped lunch and had a snack. You most likely came home and powered up some device or another to pass the time, visited your house-mates, had something to eat, and soon, you'll be winding down for bed. Maybe you'll read a little first.

That's a lot of stuff to do! Congratulations! We live in a busy world, and we cram a lot into our days. The day I outlined above was my average day when I worked in a bank. Five days a week, that was my life. I was paid pretty well for that life, but something was missing.

Like most Americans, I was working pretty hard to make a living. But I really can't say I was working very hard to live. I sat at a desk for 8 hours a day, ate processed foods, collected work related stress, and had a pretty sedentary view on entertainment. Diet and Exercise were "in case of emergency" situations. I worked too hard to spend what little leisure time I had getting sweaty and eating baby carrots.

It was shocking to me when I realized how wrong I really had it: what good is all that hard work going to do me or my family if my health is too poor to do anything about it? Why are we working so hard and then paying a bunch of money out to pharmaceutical companies to keep is going?

What the hell are we doing to ourselves?

Now, look again at that day I wrote about. That might not be your day exactly, but it's pretty close to the day your average American has. What's missing? If you're anything like I was, you're missing Investment Time. Yeah, I just made that up, but it's spiffy sounding, so we're going with it!

We all need to tuck into our day and find some time to invest in ourselves. I'm not talking about taking time to draw, relax, or watch teevee, either. I'm talking about quality time spent investing in YOU. All of those other things aren't going to do you a bit of good if you're too sick to appreciate them. We need to get up, and get going.

Tired and stressed out? You have every right to be. Your life is hard. And that yoga class is going to wear you right out, too. But at the end of the day, you chose to clock some investment time, and the impact of your day's fatigue and stress is going to be diminished.

Carrying too much ballast? It's hard to get your feet off the ground when your gut is keeping you anchored. I'm prescribing 60 minutes a day of Investment Time for the next year, call me if you need more.

I'm speaking from hard, honest experience here. For the last four months, I've been logging Investment Time for at least an hour a day. Sometimes, it really, really sucks. Sometimes, I'm too giddy to speak coherently. And I'm still not in the shape I want to be in. I still have months of Investment Time to log to get to that, and a lifetime more to keep it.

But here is four months of Investment Time:

It's not a ton, nor is it terribly dramatic, but it's there. I'm carrying less ballast, I've removed a bit of Cardiac Batter. My joints are less achy, my posture is better, and I'm more confident in my work. I know there is a lot to do still, but I'm slowly learning to accept that the investment is worth it.

So, come join me. Look at your day, honestly and objectively. You most likely have some Investment Time tucked away in there somewhere. Give yourself four solid, admirable months. It might just change your life!

An Introduction, of Sorts

Welcome to Frisch Lifestyle! There is a lot coming soon to this page, but first, a little bit about me.

My name is Leigh Kade, and I own a Vegan Restaurant in Salt Lake City, Utah. We call it Frisch, which is German for FRESH. And fresh is pretty much the emphasis on this page. I want to share with you a fresh outlook on life. Some of it is mine, some of it is adapted, and in some cases, it is borrowed.

I recently discovered that I had been doing some things in life in a counter-productive way. I was getting sedentary, and starting to pack on some old weight that I had worked pretty hard to take off. Something was wrong, but I wasn't sure what.

Then it hit me, on Thanksgiving night, of all things. I was drifting through life, pretty much living from day to day without really LIVING each day! I found some resources online, and found out that there are ways to work with yourself to get the most out of life. It's a lot of work, but the results are dramatic. In the last two months, I have seen absolutely staggering changes in how I look at life.

It all breaks down into three areas, and that's what we'll focus on at Frisch Lifestyle!

Body: The human body is an amazing thing, and it's pretty forgiving of the stress, wear, and abuse we put it through. But over time, it starts to break down. Injury, illness, and age start to take a toll on you. By better understanding what we eat, the need to move, and how we fit into the world, we can navigate our lives much easier.

Mind: I really believe that when we stop learning, we start dying. An active mind is a strong mind, so we need to exercise it. Cognitive exercises help keep the mind supple and healthy. Reading, and challenging yourself to learn new things can keep your mind fresh. By challenging ourselves, we better ourselves, and better the world we live in.

Spirit: We are drifting farther out of touch with the planet we live on as a culture. Media saturation and hectic work schedules have pulled us farther and farther away from the simple contemplation of Self. We can get back to those roots through meditation, and other simple forms of reflection and contemplation!

I will be sharing recipes, ideas about food and our relationship with it, exercise motivation, and thoughts on how to slow down and live in the now. And I'll also be learning while sharing with you, and hopefully learn as we go!
